My Word: U
My name is Shamika Gaskin. I am training to become a Christian-Based Mental Health Counselor at Liberty University. I use CBT and DBT in my work with clients. I have found that teaching grounding and mindfulness tools enable clients to reach their unique goals and reach emotional stability. I enjoy my work with clients and am humbled by what I also learn from each one of them. My current specialization interests include depression, Obsession Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, and Adjustment Disorders.
Having been a veteran myself has allowed me to reflect on the unique challenges we face during our service and then transitioning back to being a civilian. I have worked at the Veterans Affairs (VA) as a Military Services Counselor where I supported veterans obtaining various services. I then founded and became a Certified Peer Mentor at Veteran's Come 1st, Inc., an organization to support veterans challenged by mental health and substance abuse. I enjoyed coaching and increasing veteran connections with their own community.
My experiences have included working with children and adolescents. I'm excited to be extending my clinical skills with younger people and learning more about developmental differences and emotional challenges that present to younger clients. I also have experience working with seniors. Counseling can help seniors feel less lonely, less anxious, and work through depression and grief. I would love to help seniors adjust to new situations and improve their quality of life. I also enjoy existential conversations with seniors.
I am excited and looking forward to working with you and together we can work together to help achieve whatever goals you have and want to fulfill.
I love to travel, bowl, and sing karaoke in my spare time.
